thanksgiving

In an effort to keep my stress levels lower this holiday season, I decided not to go anywhere for Thanksgiving. The family my sister works for invited us to join them so I said yes. Then I found out that there will be 50 people there. Man, those people know how to party.

Then I remembered that hello? I have new appliances this year. Why am I not cooking my own dinner? So I decided that I would cook a simple turkey dinner so that we could feast off of the leftovers for days. So we’ll have late lunch at the party house and then a nice dinner later at home.

Menu:

  • turkey & gravy
  • dressing (cooked outside of the turkey)
  • cream cheese corn
  • green beans
  • mashed potoates
  • banana cream cheese pie
  • hawaiian sweet rolls

I might add a can of jellied cranberry sauce, but only if Thom wants it. I don’t eat the stuff.

So what’s on the menu at your house? Are you keeping it traditional, or trying something new?

So… Are you not cool with the turkey’s cavity?

Don’t tell anyone, but I’ve never choked a turkey.

(that is supposed to say “cooked” a turkey)

(but I’ve also never choked a turkey)

What are Hawaiian sweet rolls? Do you need to share the recipe with me?

We go to my moms, she does the turkey. mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, stuffing. My brother brings wine, beer and soda. Hubby and I make the sides. This year its parmesean roasted cauliflower, Pioneer Woman’s green beans, Pioneer Woman’s cranberry sauce (I don’t eat that jelly stuff but I LOVE this), roasted brussel sprouts with apple and bacon, cole slaw, salad with german bacon dressing, creamed cucumbers and Maque choux . For dessert Pumpkin bread pudding, and the Pioneer Woman’s pecan Pie and Cranberry Pie. We love us some Pioneer Woman!!

Thanksgiving has always been a big deal to me. We always have the same food. Every. Single. Year. If we don’t, someone will inevitably say, “Where is the blee blah bloo? It’s just not Thanksgiving without it!” Here is a typical menu:
Turkey (either smoked, baked or fried)
Cornbread dressin’
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potato casserole (brown sugar and pecan topping)
Green bean bundles wrapped in bacon (as opposed to green bean casserole)
Mac ‘n’ cheese
Those nasty cans of Le Sueur green peas
Rolls (yeast or brown ‘n’ serve)
Fruit salad
Pecan pie
About 50 other desserts
RELISH TRAY! We always have a tray with olives, pickles, cranberry sauce, stuffed celery, etc. ALWAYS.

And now I see why I weigh 300 pounds.

Happy Thanksgiving, Carissa!

Lisa’s roasted brussel sprouts with apple and bacon sound wonderful. I need the recipe.
The cauliflower sound good too. I have roasted asparagus with parmesan before – yummm.
Our dinner was with my sons family this year at their house. I only had to bring the sausage dressing and sweet potato casserole. What a nice way to spend Thanksgiving. The Wii Sports games were challenging and fun. I am pretty good at bowlig and so-so at water skiing. Lots of fun though. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
